Golden Syrup

This will be the last post for a few weeks, as I type the last bits of our cosy office are being packed into boxes, we currently have a storage unit full to bursting with our precious things. The house feels a bit sad now, cant wait for this to be over with and to get my little cottage back again!

So as the house is in a horrendous state and I cant bare to take an photos of it I thought I would do a totally pointless post about something that made me happy this week.

I love Golden Syrup...I mean who doesn't, it brilliant stuff! I cant tell you how many of my recipes include a spoon full of it to add a little sweetness or a nice crust to the top of a loaf! I am a total sugerholic, my sweet tooth is legendary in our household but its not the only reason I like golden syrup so much, no I'm also a sucker for nice packaging!

I love Lyles Golden Syrup tins, they are hugely iconic in the UK, I remember my Mum having tins of it in the cupboard when I was growing up, I also remember my Dad keep the tins as they where so useful (something I now do too!) According to their website the packaging has remained pretty much unchanged since 1885! How many brands can say that!

Its not just the lovely tins alone I like, I have for about 13 years now always felt I have a special connection with Lyles Golden Syrup. When I very first left home to move into my first house with Rich while we where at Uni, my parents went through their attic finding old bits of furniture I could take with me (as you do, aren't parents great like that!), my Dad unearthed an old chest that he and Mum had had since they where first married which I believe had come from my Mums grandparents (feel free to correct me if I have remember this wrong Mum). It was painted in a very thick heavy green with a rotten old lid on it. Dad being the clever little so an so he was replaced the lid, made some lovely bent metal carrying handles for it and lightly sanded some of the green paint off to see what the wood was like underneath, it was then that he discoved this rather battered old trunk was actually made of old packing cases ...

...How amazing is this! Needless to say Dad left the crate half sanded, my Mum was slightly miffed as she'd had the trunk for ages and not realised how nice it was under all the paint work (Ha! Sorry Mum its all mine now!!). The trunk has followed me from house to house ever since, trunks being hugely useful things. It now doubles as a window seat and holds our extensive DVD collection!

It is one of my favourite bits of our furniture, I adore it because Dad fixed it up for me and because the logo is just so cool! While we where shopping this week I happened to spot this limited edition tin which instantly had to come home with us...

Yep this is how I have chosen to show my support to our monarchy and country...by cooking a shed load of very sweet cakes and biscuits (its not fattening, is patriotic!), once empty this tin will be pressing to service as a paint brush holder in our studio. Love Golden Syrup.

So there we are a totally pointless post, never mind it made me smile! See you all in June...x

It might be a 'totally pointless post', but it's a lovely chest and that tin of syrup really is a 'must have' isn't it.

Good luck with all the work and I hope you soon have your happy little home back to normal again.

Sue xx

I spotted Lyle's Golden Syrup (jarred, not canned) in my local grocery here in rural Massachusetts some years ago and bought one based strictly on the bizarre label with the decaying lion. I have no clue what to do with it (probably expired by now anyway!); it's still in the cupboard!
