Floorboard Shelving & Vintage Curtains

Things have been a little quite for the last week as we took the chance of a little holiday up in Shropshire with the parental units, always very much welcome! While we where there I had set myslef the rather unrealistic goal of acquiring an Ercol plate rack, Ive been after one for months but had drawn a blank, the prices on ebay with the postage were crazy so I'd decided to scourer the Shrop junk shops and on the second to last day in Bridgnorth I scored!!

Quite frankly I think Rich was just relived as it meant I stopped going on about it! Im planning to sand it back to take the glossy vanish finish off then maybe wax it, we've done our G Plan sideboard the same way and it looks great. It should go nicely with the oak worktops and shelves, cant wait to be able to have all my vintage plates out where I can see them!

We have also manage to get the other storage solution sorted, for ages I've wanted to put a big long shelf over the door into the kitchen to keep all the pots and pans on, our next door neighbour who's a carpenter had given us a long off-cut but it was too short, luckily another neighbour had some old floorboards knocking around with he swapped us for Rich helping him hang some doors. We are so lucky to live in such a great neighbourhood!

Once I've filled all the old nail holes we'll paint this white so its less noticeable but it will sort my issue of where to keep pots and pans!

The next little job was to hang the vintage curtains I got from a boot sale months ago, they've been hidden away in a cupboard for ages as I knew I wanted them for the kitchen, my Mum was a total star and turned the hem on them while she was house swapping with us, apparently theres nothing like watching Game of Thrones while hemming curtains!

Im super chuffed with these, they are original 1950's barkcloth curtains in near perfect condition, I got them off a lady at a carboot sale for they crazy price of £2, she had had them stored away on a cupboard for at least 20 years. It feels so nice to use something thats been unloved for so long, to have it out in the day light again and being appreciated.

So some progress, we still have a list of stuff to do including painting the draw and cupboard fronts white, tile a splash-back (using the tiles left over from the bathroom), fit a tap and recover the seats! I pretty sure that we are going to come in on budget which was £200 for the whole refit, this had only been possible by reusing the existing units and buying graded and second hand stuff.

Right...next on the list, new shed!

Love the bark cloth fabric! I think I would have switched them round to be a blind though. For some unfathomable reason curtains just don't go with kitchens in my mind. Isn't it weird how our brains create these completely pointless rules sometimes? (Well mine does - LOL!)
Looking forward to your next kitchen installment :-)
