Baked Bean Tin

We have had a big metal barrel acting as a rough water butt at the back of our garage ever since we bought our cottage. Its always annoyed me as its was wonky and the guttering that fed it had long since parted company with the wall supporting it so the butt was only catching whatever rain chose to fall directly into it. It is however a rather nice shade of shabby blue (rather similar to the Cortina but don't tell Rich I compared the rusty old barrel to his beloved car!)

A little while ago I had had the brilliant idea of emptying the green goopy water out of it and moving it up to the lawn to act as a giant planter. Rich seemed ok with this but pointed out that is was a huge task and would take all day and basically he was snowed under with work and didn't have time...so at 4pm on Sunday I took it into my head to just go ahead and do it! It took an hour to empty (one watering can full at a time) , then drag it away from the garage and up to the lawn.

Yesterday afternoon I spend another few hours filling it with soil we dug out for the parking spaces, then I moved the blueberries from one of the raised beds and there we are! I also added the metal plant frame Rich got me for my birthday last year as it seemed to finish it off nicely! Ok is does indeed look like a big baked bean tin, not everyones cup of tea I know but I love it.

I do have bigger plans for this end of the lawn (which is very rough and mossy) we are planning on putting in another two long thin raised beds made of scaffolding planks which will be for the raspberries and one for the strawberries, that way all the fruit will be up on the lawn on one side of the chicken coop and the veg will be in the two big beds on the other side.
We are also going to take out the lethal Hawthorn hedge as we simple hate it. The spikes on it are horrible, we have both suffered from getting them through the soles of our shoes and I'm amazed no one has been blinded when trying to cut the damn thing so its coming out be being replaced with fruit trees as soon as possible.

I love this time of year, when the garden is starting to wake up again, I'm full of ambitions and plans but as usual we have no time and very little money so I feel that there will be much more recycling of rusty old barrels before the end!
